Over 1,200 Participants at 2026 Science Festival Drone Experience Zone Over 3 Days… Drone Basketball and Indoor Drone Racing Experiences Popular 

The ‘2026 Science Festival,’ hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea and organized by the Korea Foundation for Science and Creativity, Daejeon Metropolitan City, and the Daejeon Tourism Organization, was held from April 17 to 19 at the Daejeon Convention Center and the Expo Park area. During the event, the drone experience hall operated by the World Drone Sports Association (President Woo Hyun-ho) and Drone Division Co., Ltd. received a great response from visitors.

As a representative domestic science and culture event designed to allow the public to directly see, experience, and enjoy science and technology, the festival aims to popularize science and foster future talent through diverse content, including exhibitions of the latest technologies such as AI, humanoid robots, defense robots, and drones, as well as hands-on programs, performances, and events. In particular, the festival receives high interest every year as experience-oriented programs for youth and family visitors are being expanded.

At this event, the World Drone Sports Federation (WDSF) experience zone was operated at Exhibition Hall 2 of the Daejeon Convention Center. With approximately 1,200 participants over three days, the event served as a venue to confirm the potential for the popularization of drone sports. The main content showcased at the site included "Drone Basketball," developed by the WDSF, and "Walking Racing," an indoor drone racing discipline.

Participants began with basic drone piloting training from experts and engaged in hands-on programs utilizing actual drones. Through the experiences of Drone Basketball and Drone Racing, they directly experienced the appeal of drone sports. Notably, the experience site was broadcast live via the YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@wdsf9116), allowing for real-time interaction with online viewers.

The WDSF emphasized that Drone Basketball is a new concept sport originating in South Korea and presented achievements from domestic and international competitions scheduled for 2024 and 2025. Through this, they demonstrated that drone sports are growing beyond simple experiential activities into international sports. In addition, the World Drone Sports Federation is operating certification courses for drone basketball referees (Levels 1 and 2) and coaches to foster professional drone sports personnel.

On this day, the experience center was operated with excitement, featuring commentary by world-class drone sports referees including Director Jeong Han-young.

Furthermore, promotion was conducted on-site for an international drone sports competition (scheduled to be held in Chungbuk) being promoted as part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 2026 Drone Demonstration City project. The competition, scheduled for this coming August, will be announced via the World Drone Sports Federation's official blog (https://blog.naver.com/drone_sports), and registration for participating teams will also be conducted online.

Woo Hyun-ho, President of the World Drone Sports Federation, stated, "Drone sports is a future-oriented content that fuses education, industry, and entertainment," adding, "Through this Science Festival, we were able to widely publicize the potential and scalability of drone sports."

Meanwhile, the operation of this experience center is being evaluated as contributing to the spread of scientific culture and enhancing understanding of future industries as an experiential educational content that combines drone technology with sports.

2026 사이언스페스티벌 드론체험장 3일간 1,200여 명 참여… 드론농구·실내드론레이싱 체험 인기

한국 과학기술정보통신부가 주최하고 한국과학창의재단, 대전광역시, 대전관광공사가 주관한 ‘2026 사이언스페스티벌’이 4월 17일부터 19일까지 대전컨벤션센터와 엑스포공원 일대에서 개최된 가운데, 세계드론스포츠연합회(회장 우현호)와 ㈜드론디비젼이 운영한 드론 체험관이 관람객들의 큰 호응을 얻었다.

이번 사이언스페스티벌은 과학기술을 국민이 직접 보고, 체험하고, 즐길 수 있도록 마련된 국내 대표 과학문화 행사로, AI, 휴머노이드 로봇, 국방 로봇과 드론 등 최신 과학기술 전시와 체험형 프로그램, 공연·이벤트 등 다양한 콘텐츠를 통해 과학의 대중화와 미래 인재 양성을 목표로 한다. 특히 청소년과 가족 단위 관람객이 참여할 수 있는 체험 중심 프로그램이 확대되며 매년 높은 관심을 받고 있다.

이번 행사에서 세계드론스포츠연합회 체험장은 대전컨벤션센터 제2전시장에서 운영됐으며, 3일간 약 1,200여 명이 참여하며 드론 스포츠의 대중화 가능성을 확인하는 자리로 마련됐다. 현장에서는 세계드론스포츠연합회가 개발한 ‘드론농구’와 실내 드론 레이싱 종목인 ‘워킹레이싱’이 주요 콘텐츠로 선보였다.

참가자들은 드론전문가에게 드론 조종 기초 교육을 시작으로 실제 드론을 활용한 체험 프로그램에 참여했으며, 드론농구 및  드론레이싱 체험을 통해 드론 스포츠의 매력을 직접 경험했다. 특히 체험 현장은 유튜브 채널 (www.youtube.com/@wdsf9116) 을 통해 라이브 방송으로 송출되어 온라인 관람객과도 실시간으로 소통했다.

세계드론스포츠연합회는 드론농구가 대한민국이 종주국인 신개념 스포츠임을 강조하며, 2024년과 2025년 국내외 대회 성과를 소개했다. 이를 통해 드론 스포츠가 단순 체험을 넘어 국제 스포츠로 성장하고 있음을 알렸다.

또한 세계드론스포츠연합회는 드론 스포츠 전문 인력 양성을 위해 드론농구 심판(1·2급)과 드론농구 지도자 자격과정을 운영하고 있다.

이날 체험장에서 정한영 이사 등 세계드론스포츠전문 심판 진에 의해 중계까지 진행돼 박진감 있는 체험장을 운영했다.

아울러 현장에서는 2026년 국토교통부 드론실증도시 구축 사업의 일환으로 추진되는 드론 스포츠 분야 국제대회(충북 개최 예정)에 대한 홍보도 함께 진행됐다. 오는 8월 예정된 해당 대회는 세계드론스포츠연합회 공식 블로그 (https://blog.naver.com/drone_sports) 를 통해 공지되며, 선수단 참가 접수 역시 온라인으로 진행될 예정이다.

세계드론스포츠연합회 우현호 회장은 “드론 스포츠는 교육, 산업, 엔터테인먼트를 융합한 미래형 콘텐츠”라며 “이번 사이언스페스티벌을 통해 드론 스포츠의 가능성과 확장성을 널리 알릴 수 있었다”고 밝혔다.

한편, 이번 체험관 운영은 드론 기술과 스포츠를 결합한 체험형 교육 콘텐츠로서 과학문화 확산과 미래 산업 이해도 제고에 기여했다는 평가를 받고 있다.
